Share your story and connect your healing and transformation to the world’s healing and transformation. Through storytelling, the extreme isolation I endured while imprisoned has been transformed into immense connection. First, I co authored a memoir about the 410 days I survived being held as a political hostage by the Iranian government from 2009 to 2010. Then I wrote a play, The BOX, based on my three-year investigation into resistance to solitary confinement inside prisons and jails in the US. This play has changed lives and legislation. It has been performed at conferences, well-known theaters, the former penitentiary on Alcatraz Island and the Philadelphia jail where the brutal torture of solitary confinement was first implemented. The show not only has reached thousands of people, but also has served as a powerful organizing tool for activists and politicians across the US. Former California Senator Mark Leno affirmed that the 2016 performances contributed to the passing of his bill ending the use of solitary in juvenile facilities throughout California. While I was a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford in 2018, I developed a methodology on how to maximize one’s writing impact through a user-centered approach to the audience. I’ve also compiled an anthology, co-created a graphic novel and hosted a podcast (see sarahshourd.com). Through somatic exercises, I can help you dig deep, find your best writing and then strategically activate your writing by targeting the audiences who need it the most.
